Bryan Singer, who is the latest rube to get sucked into making the new "Superman" movie, (and no more "X-Men" movies, apparently) may have finally figured out there's already an actor out there PLAYING Superman so why not give the role to him? It's something I have long wondered. Why not tie Smallville in with the new Superman movie? It's not like "Smallville" will be around forever--it's very steadily running itself into the ground with consistant suckiness.
It all strikes me as being a giant "No Duh" Hollywood moment. (As opposed to the "What the?!" Hollywood moment mentioned below.)

saying this as someone who used to work in the industry, they were probably hoping for a more bankable name. That's how much movies get ruined. The actor who would have done an amazing job and would have made the movie incredible, gets passed up for a bigger name (with possibly lesser talent or fit for the role. Think Ashley Judd). The industry sucks sometimes. It will always first and foremost be about money. Thank God for the independents!!
Money....but of course!
Too bad the powers-that-be can't utilize the benefit of hindsight and realize that sometime casting an unknown can be even better than a bankable name. Like in the case of...the first "Superman" movie!
In this case it just seems that they have something one better. They have an automatic audience of "Smallville" fans, and to everyone else, Tom Welling is just a very good-looking newcomer.
Well, all I know is that Kyle MacLachlan is perfect for the starring role of George Reeves (y'know, the guy who played Supes in the 1950s TV series) when/if the biopic "Truth, Justice and the American Way" ever gets made. His name's been up for the role for at least two years...Tom Welling, on the other hand, just seems to radiate a personality void to me. Not that I can think of anybody else to don the cape.
