Spoiler alert: Vincent Price will be TCM's Horror Star on Halloween night, but I have a bit of a rant planned surrounding that, (not about Price, but about the whole "Horror Star" thing). So I'll use today's post to praise Vincent Price. Or more accurately, Vincent Price impersonations, which are definitely in my top five fave celebrity impersonations
Here's a classic from comedian Dana Gould.
Gould's is pretty great, but I'm not sure anyone can top Bill Hader's. His Vincent Price holiday specials were always an SNL highlight.
I don't have a movie for you today. Instead, let's go back in time for a moment
Every couple of years, I feel it's very important to remember that there was once a creepy gnome terrorizing parts of Argentina, and he was caught on tape.
OK, fine, maybe he wasn't exactly "terrorizing" Argentina....and maybe he wasn't an actual gnome...and OK yeah, whoever it was probably knew those kids who conveniently began to film nothing a few moments before his appearance.
But I still think this is one of the most brilliant bits of fake video ever made; the scream and cut to black at the end pushes it over the edge into masterpiece territory.
I'll admit, I was shocked to hear about the death of Whitney Houston. I can't say I was ever a big fan of her music, (just way too adult contemporary for my tastes), but there was no disputing she had an amazing voice that just puts other so-called divas to shame.
I was more a fan of Whitney Houston herself, in all her crazy glory. Of course, it was pretty obvious a lot of her kookiness came from her drug use, so it's probably in poor taste to find any of that funny now.
Except, I still do, and there's really no way I can curb that. So, I choose to remember her in the many ways she, and her influence, made me laugh.
Like this moment, where she's with Bobby B., and decides to try on some sunglasses.
Or here, where she's telling him, or maybe the cameraman, or maybe just the world, to kiss her ass.
I've also found myself mourning the (probable) loss of Maya Rudolph's Whitney impersonation, which never failed to crack me up. In a weird coincidence, Rudolph is set to host "Saturday Night Live" next week, and I am hoping they find a way to keep her impersonation alive.
Here are a few of the best of Rudolph's Whitney moments, collected so I can have a localized place to watch them over and over and over again, which I plan to do. A lot.
I got laid off on Tuesday. I wasn't the only one. Perhaps you read about it? Yes, just in time for Christmas. Ironically, the last time I was laid off, from a different job, was also right before the holidays. What's up with that?
So, that has cast a little pall over the season, but I am doing my best to just appreciate the fact that I have some time off, and am not a few dollars away from living on the street.
Still, it's tough. I ain't gonna lie.
But enough about that! Here's some bitter Christmas fun!
Maybe one of these years I'll have the energy to do a daily Christmas post kind of thing, like the Halloween countdown. But not this year! Alas...
Still, I'll try to provide SOME occasional merriment. Like this clip from the dearly departed "Bonnie Hunt Show," in which she interviews my Muppet boyfriend Pepe the King Prawn. I hope you like it okay.
Probably no way to find out who originally posted this comment, but feel free to use it the next time you are dealing with idiots and trolls. Or Bill O'Reilly.
Look at your comment. Back to mine. Back to yours, NOW BACK TO MINE. Sadly, it isn't mine. But if you stopped trolling and started posting legitimate crap it could LOOK like mine. Look down, back up, where are you? You're scrolling through comments, finding the ones that your comment could look like. Back at mine, what is it? It's a highly effective counter-troll. Look again, MY COMMENT IS NOW DIAMONDS.
Anything is possible when you think before you comment or post.
I was watching Rob Corddry on "The Martha Stewart Show" promoting "Hot Tub Time Machine," (which I have an unhealthy desire to see; who's with me?!), and making ice cream sundaes, and I remembered this bit he did years ago on "The Daily Show," where he went back to his hometown of Boston and revisited the traumas of his youth. The phrase "C'MON CORDDRY!" has, ever since I first watched it, entered my vernacular, although I find I have very few opportunities to actually use it.
This is just too perfect. On Saturday, I was watching some of the very CNN stuff Jon Stewart talks about in this clip and, since I don't normally watch a lot of CNN, I kept asking myself what the hell that Rick Sanchez dude's problem was. Stewart nails it.
For the last couple of years I have been under the impression that Janeane Garofalo wasn't funny any more. I mean, she could still make me laugh when I saw her on a news program or somesuch, taking on the role of liberal pundit, but I figured her stand-up would just be political and preachy. (Which isn't to say that's bad--I share most of her political beliefs, after all--but it's not the pinnacle of fun, either.)
Pee-Wee Herman's been in the news of late because he has revamped his stage show, "The Pee-Wee Herman Show," and it's currently running in Los Angeles. I saw the original run when it went on tour in the '80s--and actually kind of met Paul Reubens after the show--so of course it's bringing up some waves of nostalgia for me...
Back in the '80s, John Paragon, the guy who played Jambi, had a comedy special called "The Paragon of Comedy" which aired on Showtime. I thought it was pretty hilarious at the time, and two sketches have stuck with me to this day. I present them to you below. And I hope "The Pee-Wee Herman Show" comes to San Francisco, 'cause I'd love to check it out again and feed my nostalgia even more...
There are very few recent Christmas specials that deserve yearly viewings. But "A Colbert Christmas" is an exception. It's required viewing every year.
Unfortunately, Comedy Central seems to be waging a war against Christmas as the only time the special will be airing this coming week is at 2:30am late, late Christmas Eve.
