Happy Thanksgiving!

I begin this holiday a bit disappointed. I was so hoping some TV station out there would air "Blood Freak" today, since it really is the perfect Thanksgiving film. It's a pro-Jesus horror movie about the dangers of drug use, and tainted-turkey eating, and how a combination of the two can turn you into a horrific man-sized fowl in search of blood. Really, is there any other message more meaningful today?

Here's the first 10 minutes. Alas, the really good stuff doesn't happen until further in, but perhaps it will encourage you to add this sucker to your Netflix queue, and stat.

I Guess I Was Just Too Blind To See

I can't believe I missed this. I sat through almost every minute of the two painful hours of the Thanksgiving Day Parade this morning, but I guess during the ten minutes I was washing my face and getting dressed, this happened.



There were at least 268 marching bands featured during the parade, and I chose this moment to leave the room. Epic FAIL.

Tom Turkey Ran Away, But He Just Came Home!

There aren't very many Thanksgiving songs out there, so I'm going to go ahead and name "Turkey Lurkey Time" the one and only official Thanksgiving song. Even though it's actually about Christmas.

It's from the 1968 musical "Promises, Promises," which was written by Neil Simon, with music and lyrics by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and is actually based on the movie "The Apartment." I think it's due for a revival. There are other memorable songs in it (including "I'll Never Fall In Love Again") but "Turkey Lurkey Time" is easily my fave, both because it's pretty dumb, and because the musical number in the play has some INSANE choreography. (I'm glad to know I'm not the only person obsessed with the song, as Brock over at SFist has linked to it more than once. This guy also has a funny take on the number.)

So, in honor of Thanksgiving and mini dresses, I present you with three versions of the song...

First up is a performance from the 1968 Tonys. Video quality is for crap, but you can still experience the insanity and potential whiplash inducing movements of the choreography.



Next is a TV performance, but I have no idea where from. Seems to be about the same time as the above, though.



And last is from "Camp," which was a good little indie movie about a performing arts summer camp. (That's why the number kind of blends into other stage performances at the end of the song).



Have a Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! And if you want to burn off some of those unwanted calories, I suggest you learn the Turkey Lurkey dance. You'll be slim by Christmas.

It's (Almost) Turkey Lurkey Time!

Oh boy! I can almost taste the stuffin' 'n' gravy! I can hardly wait! In honor of the holiday, here's a song that's really more about Christmas, but they sing about turkey, so what the hell. It's extremely catchy. I dare you not to not sing it the rest of the day after listening to it. It was originally in the Burt Bacharach, Neil Simon musical "Promises, Promises," but this version is from the movie "Camp," which is a really good little indie movie about a summer camp for theater geeks.



I hope every one has a terrific Thanksgiving! If everything goes as planned, I should end up like this come Thursday night.

I'm not sure if I'll be doing any blogging tomorrow, so in case I don't here's an early "Happy Thanksgiving!" from me. It's a short film from the 1950s, that's earnest and only slightly amusing.

Man, how I wish it was accompanied by commentary from the MST3K lads. In fact, I miss those guys a lot, especially around Thanksgiving. I remember when Comedy Central used to air 24 hours of "MST3K" episodes as a Thanksgiving "turkey" marathon. Those were the days...

Eat. Sit. Watch TV.
